0938: Hamilton steadily improves to a 1:24.990. Nico Hulkenberg takes his Williams around in 1:26.020 and is third fastest. Kamui Kobayashi is struggling in his BMW Sauber and he seemed to be going very slowly at one point. Don't know what happened there. Apparently the Japanese driver is wearing a black armband in tribute to Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa, who died after a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix last weekend.

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh on the Ferrari controversy: "They're either guilty and should be given a penalty, or they're not guilty and should be given back the fine they received. We don't have clarity - if anything it's more muddy. Superficially it doesn't seem as logical a ruling as one would have expected but it has no impact on anything I'm going to do this weekend."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt on Twitter: "Could be a bit of a headache for McLaren. Their F-duct isn't likely to work as well in combination with a flatter Monza-spec rear wing."

0931: Lewis Hamilton is on a timed lap now, and he goes fastest with a 1:25.816 while Alguersuari goes second with a 1:25.897.

0927: Alguersuari improves to a 1:26.850. The only drivers not to have posted an installation lap so far are the Hispania pairing of Bruno Senna and Sakon Yamamoto.

Twitter
Lotus driver Heikki Kovalainen on Twitter: "Not a great start this morning, did the installation lap and hydraulics failed again... maybe get out at the end of the session."

0923: Schumacher is putting in a few miles - he's done 10 laps already. His best is a 1:26.038 while the Toro Rosso of Jaime Alguersuari posts a 1:27.424. They are the only two times on the board so far.

Catch 22 on 606: "Morning Mark. McLaren rear wing is massive mate. Last time I seen a tail like that it was attached to a whale."

Twitter
JoeBahru on Twitter: "Does any one have any idea of a good sports bar in Johor Bahru that will be showing the race?"

BBC Sport's Andrew Benson at Monza: "It's a lovely morning here. The golden autumn sunshine is streaming through the trees of the old Royal Park and the famous tifosi are already out in force, expecting great things of their favourite team. The pressure is always high on Ferrari to do well at their home race, but this weekend it is more intense than I can remember for years. Fernando Alonso slipped further behind in the championship with his poor weekend in Belgium two weeks ago and he knows he has to score well here. After escaping further punishment over the team orders incident in Germany, they have arrived here admitting it is a critical race for them. Alonso has already made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes this season. How will he respond here this weekend?"

0912: There's only one time set so far, that's a 1:28.150 posted by Schumacher. Most of the drivers have completed their installation laps.

BBC pit-lane reporter Holly Samos: "Michael Schumacher has already said he expects to struggle. He feels that certain circuits, like Monza, do not play into the hands of Mercedes."

Hispania's Karun Chandhok on the Red Button: "Monza is an amazing circuit. It's a special place and is up there in the top-four circuits."

BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz: "Have you seen the size of the McLaren rear wing? It's like a barn door."

0900: And we are off, it's a busy start to the session. Alonso, Michael Schumacher and Robert Kubica are some of the drivers out and about early doors.

Twitter
DavidWanna on Twitter: "Maybe the start of your day... for us in Chiangai, Thailand it's Friday afternoon and a perfect way to end the week."

0851: It's an absolutely gorgeous morning in Italy, the sun is shining on the Monza track. I'm not jealous, Shepherd's Bush is lovely when it's overcast. If you want more weather detail, have a look at BBC weatherman Ian Fergusson's forecast. BBC coverage is about to start on the Red Button and at the top of this page by the way.

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Monza: "Fernando Alonso was exchanging cheeky grins with McLaren's Jenson Button as they sat together on the front row of the media conference in Monza but the grin soon faded when the Ferrari driver had to field questions about his personal reaction to the FIA's decision not to punish the Italian team further for using banned team orders. Alonso and Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa both repeated the party line that the incident was in the past and they preferred to focus on this weekend's home grand prix. But after half an hour of batting away the media's best efforts, Alonso cracked and with another a rather ironic grin said: 'I'm sure you are talking about the decision… you have to respect it and be calm. Respect everything as we do and don't worry.'"

0842: So what do you think about all the F1 news? Apparently 'Ferrari International Assistance' was trending on Twitter during the week so I think I've got a vague idea about what a significant proportion of you thought of the decision not to punish the team further for their actions at the German GP. There's plenty to chat about so don't be shy. Give me your thoughts on 606 (from 0900 BST), Twitter or text us on 81111 (UK) or +44 7786200666 (worldwide) with FORMULA 1 before your message. Nice.

0838: Morning all. Well it has been a nice and quiet week in F1 hasn't it? Er… maybe not. We've had the Ferrari team orders hearing - I'm thinking of calling it overtakegate, what do you think? - the publication of a 20-race F1 calendar for next year, the rejection of all new entries for next season as well as the first try-out by an F1 driver of the new Korean GP circuit. There's apparently a race this weekend as well.

0835: This is the time of year when being a Ferrari driver comes into its own - a home grand prix, at Monza, in front of the tifosi, answering questions about your team's controversial conduct... hang on, that last bit's not right is it?
