1648: Tommy Robredo is a break up against Julien Benneteau and serving for the first set while specks of rain pepper Ashe as Elena Dementieva finally halts a five-game losing run at 5-3. However, Hantuchova is serving for the first set.

1641: I can exclusively reveal that Andy Murray is feeling "good" today after arriving at Flushing Meadows about five minutes ago. Meanwhile, third-round opponent Dustin Brown, sporting an enormous tea cosy which just about keeps his abundant dreadlocks from obscuring his vision, arrives looking like a man searching for the sundecks on the first day of his Mediterranean holiday. Elena Dementieva, however, is anything but relaxed as she loses her fifth successive game to Hantuchova. While looking elegant in an all-pink number, Hantuchova is biffing winner after winner as her Russian opponent wilts.
From Pickles91 on 606:
"Wonder if the French can continue to dominate the numbers, it's almost become France v Spain in tennis... they seem to have an awful lot of players playing!"
1634: In the world of men's tennis, Victor Hanescu of Romania is taking on Michael Llodra, conqueror of Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych in the first round. The scores are level at 2-2 in Court 13 while compatriot and doubles partner Julien Benneteau is 3-2 up against Spain's Tommy Robredo on Court 11. And fifth seed Sam Stosur is 3-2 up against Sara Errani.
1627: Oh dear, after a promising start, Dementieva's game begins to unravel as she loses three successive matches, sending down a 66mph serve in the process, as Hantuchova takes a 3-2 lead and serving in the sixth game. Ashe is completely empty save for 1,000-odd souls ready to run for cover should the clouds threaten a downpour. So far the overhead conditions are promising, but there is little of the sun which has dominated the last few days. Don't make me feel lonely - not today. 1620: Over we go to Ashe, where Elena Dementieva breaks Daniela Hantuchova's opening service game and takes an early 2-1 lead. Dementieva is one of a number of
top women's players to have taken part in a New York Times photoshoot,
wearing a series of outlandish outfits while wielding a racquet around a studio. Dementieva is looking particularly fetching in a maroon and yellow effort which, if you know your rugby league, looks like the
same colours worn by the Brisbane Broncos.
From Shahoor Sur on 606:
"Easy passage for Scotland's No 1 today. This Broon character will be swept aside by the Scottish tennis genius. Straight sets once more, with maybe a plumber's washer thrown in for good measure!"
1609: Thursday was not a good day for seeds following the exits of
Nikolay Davydenko, Marin Cilic
and
Aravane Rezai.
One seed is guaranteed to fall in the opening match on Arthur Ashe as Daniela Hantuchova (24) takes on Russia's Elena Dementieva (12). Meanwhile, French Open finalist and fifth seed Samantha Stosur is first up on Louis Armstrong against Italy's Sara Errani. We're expecting British number one Andy Murray to hit Ashe at about 2000 BST, barring any interventions from the heavens.
1602: Ahhh summer on the east coast of the United States, vitamin-enriching rays of sunlight, coupled with stifling humidity which makes a man drip with sweat reaching for his wallet as he pays for his third ice cream of the morning, the threat of a
category two Hurricane with winds of up to 100mph
which shares its name with the middle name of the man who voiced Darth Vader. And
Friday's forecast is not looking good.
Yikes.
