Britain's Andy Murray says he will take heart from his thrashing of Stanislas Wawrinka in 2008 when they meet again in the US Open third round on Sunday.

Murray, 23, beat the Swiss 6-1 6-3 6-3 en route to the final two years ago and would love a repeat performance when they meet at about 2000 BST.

"I did everything well to beat him that night," said Murray. "I had to, because he's a very, very difficult player.

"He's gone close with top players before so I need to play well to win."

Murray has cruised through to the third round at Flushing Meadows courtesy of straight-sets wins over Lukas Lacko and Dustin Brown and victory over Wawrinka would set up a last-16 contest against either Sam Querrey or Nicolas Almagro.

But the Scot, who also beat the 25-year-old from Switzerland in an epic five-set match at Wimbledon in 2009, knows he is in for a tough test.

"He does everything well," added Murray. "He serves well, he's got a solid return. He can play good doubles, he's won the Olympics with Roger [Federer] so he can volley well. He doesn't have one massive weakness.

"I had a match with him at Wimbledon that was one of the best atmospheres I played in."

Number 25 seed Wawrinka, who has so far dispatched Mikhail Kukushkin and Juan Ignacio Chela without dropping a set, has vowed to show attacking intent against the fourth seed.

"I need to stay very aggressive with my game and especially the serve," stated the Swiss. "He's very good in defence but I think I need to take the ball early and come into the net.

"He has a great serve but he is playing far away from the baseline and I think that's where I need to go, to keep him far away from the baseline.

"I know almost every player now and especially Andy, I know him pretty well. We have practised and played a lot of times together."
