Smith delight at Rangers victory

Rangers manager Walter Smith
Smith believes his Rangers side will take confidence from the win

Rangers manager Walter Smith praised his side after the 1-0 win over Bursaspor at Ibrox saw them move joint top of Champions League Group C.

Steven Naismith's goal was enough to secure victory and see them move alongside Manchester United.

"We're happy we got our win and we've gained a bit of confidence; our team worked extremely hard," Smith said.

"Naismith's been playing exceptionally well this season and we're all delighted for him."

Smith retained the same personnel and formation that secured a goalless draw against Manchester United two weeks ago.

And it paid dividends with Naismith's goal as Rangers recorded their first Champions League win in 14 attempts.

Rangers and Manchester United have four points from two games, with Valencia a point behind.

When you've drawn at Old Trafford and won your first home game then you're delighted about the position you're in

"I thought we played very well and started very well in the first half hour," Smith said afterwards.

"It was a little bit sticky before half-time - and maybe the 15-20 minutes after half-time we played very well - and, as usual in the Champions League, we had one or two problems to handle.

"But our players did exceptionally well to handle that.

"I said before the game that we had to find a better balance, in terms of attacking, and I felt we went somewhere towards that tonight.

"The periods of the game where I felt we had the upper hand and the most opportunities, then we did show it's a system we can operate in an attacking sense as well as a defensive one."

Despite sitting joint top of Group C, Smith is taking nothing for granted.

"Our next three games are against the two favoured teams in the section," he said.

"Manchester United and Valencia would have been most people's favourites to qualify.

"We haven't given up many opportunities in the two games we've played so far.

"We have to remain on top of all aspects of the game if we're going to do anything in the Champions League."

Smith added: "When you've drawn at Old Trafford and won your first home game then you're delighted about the position you're in.

"But it doesn't change our thoughts on the group. We know we'll have to play exceptionally well to have any hope of qualifying."
