Soderling and Berdych go through

Robin Soderling
Soderling lost just one game in securing his quarter-final berth

Two-time French Open finalist Robin Soderling and Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych have each posted impressive victories at the Malaysian Open.

Swedish top seed Soderling thrashed Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France 6-0, 6-1 in a mere 62 minutes.

And Czech Berdych, seeded third, dismissed Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4.

Soderling goes through to a quarter-final against eighth seed Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan, who put out Kevin Anderson 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

Soderling and Berdych restored the honour of the seeds at the Putra stadium a day after the elimination of holder and second seed Nikolay Davydenko.

Berdych needed just under 90 minutes to go through, producing seven aces and breaking the world number 43 Istomin five times.

Berdych has had a disappointing follow-up after putting Roger Federer out in the Wimbledon quarter-finals and progressing all the way to the final.

His previous bests were a pair of quarter-finals in Washington and Toronto, with a US open exit in the first round.

"My opponent was not easy, but there are no easy ones these days," said the world number seven. "I played good today, I felt good on the court.

"That is important for the first match, I got my rhythm really fast."

Berdych will face fifth seed Spaniard David Ferrer in the quarter-finals.
