Honda's Andrea Dovizioso grabbed his first ever MotoGP pole at the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi.

The Italian's best lap of one minute 47.001 seconds was 0.054sec faster than his compatriot Valentino Rossi, on a Yamaha, in second.

Casey Stoner was third and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was fourth.

Lorenzo is almost assured of the title after his nearest rival Dani Pedrosa was ruled out of Sunday's race after breaking his collarbone in practice.

Pedrosa, who trails Lorenzo by 56 points with five races remaining, crashed six minutes into Friday's session.

He has flown home to Spain for surgery and is likely to miss three races.

Dovizioso, meanwhile, was thrilled with his ride which was not wholly a surprise after he had ridden the second fastest lap times during the Friday afternoon and Saturday practice sessions.

"We started very well from yesterday," he said. "We have improved a lot. Normally, my style is not to go too fast in practice. We can make a good race."

In the Moto2 class, Britain's Scott Redding claimed second spot on the grid behind Suter team-mate Julian Simon, of Spain.

And in the 125cc, another Briton Bradley Smith was third fastest, with Spanish duo Marc Marquez and Nicolas Terol first and second respectively.
