Hughes ditched as Aussie selector

Merv Hughes
Hughes has been on the NSP for five years

Merv Hughes has lost his place on the board of Cricket Australia selectors.

The former Australia bowler, famed for his extravagant moustache, has been ditched, with ex-Australia skipper Greg Chappell joining the four-man panel.

The decision has come after a meeting including "feedback" from National Selection Panel head Andrew Hilditch.

"Unfortunately this means that Merv is no longer a member of the NSP," said said Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland.

"The board unanimously decided David Boon, Jamie Cox and Greg Chappell were the best people to join [Hiditch] on the NSP.

"Andrew was clear in his assessment that Merv had been a good selector and a strong contributor around the selection table, but that Cox, Boon and Chappell were the better options to continue on the NSP."

Cricket Australia have made the move ahead of the upcoming Ashes series, which starts when the first Test gets underway in Brisbane on 25 November.

Sutherland added: "Merv has provided valuable input and expertise to the NSP during the past five years and Cricket Australia thanks him for his contribution during this time."
