Webber calm as Alonso closes in

Red Bull's Mark Webber has admitted the momentum is with Fernando Alonso and Ferrari as the Formula 1 season nears its climax with four races remaining.

Webber leads the Spaniard by 11 points ahead of next week's Japanese GP, but Alonso has won three of the last five.

"Yes, they have had two wins on the bounce and they are looking good," said Australia's Webber, 34.

"But we did well at Suzuka last year and the points situation is pretty open. Anything can still happen."

With wins in Germany, Italy and Singapore since late July, Alonso will be confident of closing the gap further or even passing Webber in the standings in Japan as he chases his third F1 drivers' crown.

Webber, who is also 20 points ahead of Britain's Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, and 21 in front of Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel with 25 points available for a race win, insisted he would not be taking a cautious approach in the final four races.

He said: "It's nice that I have a little buffer at the top of the points right now and I am glad of that, but we still have to go out and give it all we've got.

"So, we have to go to Suzuka and get the absolute maximum out of what we have - and Suzuka is a track that, like all the drivers, I really love.

"I am sure we are going to be right there and giving it a go."

Vettel won in Suzuka last year having started from pole, with Webber down in 17th after missing qualifying following a crash in practice.

And Vettel agreed with his team-mate's assessment that the title race was still wide open.

"Ferrari have made a step forward in the last couple of races, so they will be strong - and don't forget McLaren," stated the 23-year-old German.

"There are still a lot of drivers fighting for the title and they are very close to each other. It's tight and a lot of things can still happen.

"I just want to make sure we do well, that we get the best out of ourselves as a team and then we will see."

After Japan, the remaining races are in South Korea, Brazil and Abu Dhabi, though question marks remain over Korea's debut as a grand prix host as work on the new Yeongam circuit has still to be completed.
