Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington are battling for the European Order of Merit title in a thrilling climax to the season at the Volvo Masters.

Ernie Els leads the standings, but has opted to play in Singapore this week giving Rose and Harrington the chance to claim the title in Valderrama.

Harrington made a great start as he birdied the first hole of his round to get within three shots of leader Rose.

Rose, meanwhile, birdied his first two holes in a steady start.

1155: Justin Rose gets himself in a bit of bother at the second but pulls a confident putt out of the bag from the edge of the green to save his par.

Padraig Harrington made a solid par at the same hole to keep the gap at three shots.

1140: After an arduous season, it looks like it's all going to boil down to the final 18 holes of the final tournament of the season.

With a not inconsiderable 467,644 on offer to the winner (as opposed to a meagre 311,765 for second place) there is every chance that Justin Rose or Padraig Harrington could claim a remarkable triumph in the European Tour Order of Merit by pipping Ernie Els to the title.

Effectively, it's a straight shoot-out between Rose and Harrington on a blustery day in Valderrama.

Harrington, paired with Martin Kaymer in the penultimate group, started four shots behind leader Rose, but the Irishman made the perfect start with an excellent birdie at the first.

Rose, meanwhile, parred his opening hole.
