England's Justin Rose and Luke Donald are one shot off the lead after the opening round of the invitational Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City. Rose and Donald both finished on four under par after rounds of 68 to trail joint leaders Adam Scott and Trevor Immelman by a single stroke. Ernie Els and Geoff Ogilvy are a further shot back in a high-quality field of just 12 players. Stewart Cink and Henrik Stenson are level at the Gary Player Country Club. -5 A Scott (Aus), T Immelman (SA) -4 J Rose (Eng), L Donald (Eng)

Rose, who clinched the European Tour Order of Merit title earlier this month, made a strong start with birdies at the first two holes and further birdies at the 10th and 17th completed a tidy round. Donald, still seeking his first victory of the year, was level for the front nine before four birdies in five holes swept him into contention. Immelman, who replaced Sergio Garcia in the event after the Spaniard pulled out earlier this month, blitzed the front nine with four straight birdies at the start of his round and an eagle at the 596-yard 9th. Another birdie at the 10th saw him power to seven under but the 27-year-old blotted his copy book with bogeys at the 11th and 12th. Scott fired four birdies, an eagle and one bogey to join Immelman at the head of the field. Ernie Els, playing with a new set of irons for the first time, experienced mixed fortunes with three birdies and an eagle spoiled by two early bogeys.
