Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the current side is the best he has played in and can go all the way to win the title.

The Reds top the league by three points heading into 2009 after thrashing Newcastle 5-1 and are aiming to land a first top-flight title since 1990.

England midfielder Gerrard said: "We have given ourselves a great chance.

"If we want to stay at the top and be involved in this title race, we have got to deal with the pressure."

Liverpool crushed Newcastle in a scoreline that could have been even more emphatic at St James' Park - and all without striker Fernando Torres and Robbie Keane, with the Republic of Ireland striker having scored three goals in the previous two matches.

We wanted more - Gerrard

"We have big players here and we will have a lot of tests and challenges to come but if we keep playing like this then we will be there," stated Gerrard.

The win was made all the sweeter for Liverpool fans, who are desperate for the team to add to the club's 18 League title triumphs, because nearest title rivals Chelsea drew 2-2 at Fulham.

It means Liverpool start the new year top of the league, the first time this has happened since 1996.

Gerrard has never played in a side that has been top at the start of the year but he added: "This is the best team I have played with.

"You look around the dressing room and, from the keeper to the forwards, we have some fantastic players. There is a confidence that we can get over the big hurdles."
