'Scary' referee upsets Redknapp

Harry Redknapp
Redknapp was furious with referee Tanner's performance at West Brom

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp accused referee Steve Tanner of not being good enough for the Premier League after his side's 2-0 defeat at West Brom.

Redknapp had no complaints with the dismissal of defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto but believes West Brom's first goal should have been disallowed.

"I never complain about referees - I haven't done that for years but this guy was scary," said Redknapp.

"He's a poor referee and I've seen him make a mess of so many games."

Redknapp was particularly aggrieved that Tanner allowed West Brom's opener - when Michael Dawson complained he had been pushed in the back by scorer Roman Bednar.

However, he also felt the official's overall display was unacceptable, and added: "I couldn't even put into words what I thought of his performance.

"I walked into the referee's room before the game and saw who was refereeing and I knew what was coming.

"I expected that sort of performance. I've had him before many times and I know what he's like. He's really not good enough.

"I saw him in the Championship and thought 'where has he come from?' That is my honest opinion."

But Redknapp will not be making any complaint about Tanner's performance.

"What can you do now?" he stated. "Someone thinks he is good enough but he is definitely not.

"Darren Bent chased a ball down and the big centre-half clattered him and the referee gives a throw-in.

"Michael Dawson gets pushed in the back for the goal and he doesn't see it. Everyone saw he had been pushed but the referee."
