Wales 'closing' Tri Nations gap

Shane Williams dives over for a try against Australia
Wales winger Williams has been in dazzling form in 2008

New International Rugby Board player of the year Shane Williams says he does not believe New Zealand, South Africa and Australia are way ahead of Wales.

The 31-year-old Wales wing told BBC London 94.9: "They certainly are the three best teams in the world but I think we are closing the gap.

"We showed against Australia that if you do play well, you can win."

Wales beat Australia 21-18 last week, following a 29-9 defeat by New Zealand and a 20-15 loss to South Africa.

Williams, who has scored 14 tries in his last 13 internationals, lined up alongside a number of players from world champions South Africa for the Barbarians in their 18-11 defeat by Australia on Wednesday and was struck by their will to win.

"They're a very determined bunch and they play to win - more often than not they do win," said Williams.

"It's the first time I've had a chance to work in close quarters with Bryan Habana, Bakkies Botha, (Francois) Steyn. They play at 100 miles an hour."

And Williams, who roomed with Habana while with the Barbarians, says he thinks Wales will approach the Six Nations with confidence after their victory against Australia.

"We're a very confident side, but we're going to need to do that in the Six Nations every game," he said.

"Any of these teams are capable of winning the Six Nations and it's not going to be any easier this year than last year."
