Watford chairman Simpson resigns

Watford

Graham Simpson has resigned as chairman of Watford at the club's Extraordinary General Meeting on Monday, reports BBC Three Counties Radio.

Non-executive director Andrew Wilson will take over as chairman on an interim basis.

The EGM was called after a vote of no confidence in the board was proposed by former directors Jimmy and Vince Russo.

Simpson stood down despite the proposal being withdrawn at the meeting and no vote taken.

Simpson, who had been chairman of the club since September 2002 and initially steered the club away from the threat of administration, revealed in July that the was willing to sell the club, but always stated that he would remain at Vicarage Road until a new buyer could be found.

His departure continues the turmoil at the Hornets, which saw Elton John, who was critical of Simpson's regime, give up his position as life president and former manager Aidy Boothroyd part company with the club by mutual consent last month.
