Maccarinelli secures Ramirez bout

Enzo Maccarinelli
Maccarinelli hopes to become the first Welshman to regain a world title

Enzo Maccarinelli will face Victor Ramirez in Manchester on 14 March.

The bout will be on the undercard of Amir Khan's showdown with Marco Antonio Barrera at the MEN Arena.

Argentine Ramirez, 24, is the interim WBO cruiserweight champion, but it is unclear whether the vacant WBO title will be up for grabs.

Promoter Frank Warren had planned to match Swansea's Maccarinelli against Johnathon Banks, but Banks will face IBF champion Tomasz Adamek next month.

Maccarinelli, 28, held the WBO belt from 2006, but lost it when he was knocked out by David Haye in two rounds last March.

The Welshman was due to face Banks, 26, for the WBO belt in London in December, but the Detroit fighter had an ankle injury.

Maccarinelli destroyed last-minute stand-in Matthew Ellis at heavyweight in two rounds at London's ExCeL Arena.

With Haye now campaigning at heavyweight, Maccarinelli - who has a record of 29 wins (22 knock-outs) and two defeats - is desperate to become the first Welshman to reclaim a world title.

Ramirez, who comes from Buenos Aires, was little known until a surprise win over previously undefeated German Alexander Alexeev last week.

The nine-round victory in Dusseldorf was the Argentine's first fight outside his homeland and won him the interim WBO title.

That took his record to 14 wins (12 by knock-out) and one defeat from his three-year professional career.
