Lendl Simmons hit a superb 282 as West Indies A posted 574-8 declared against England on the second day of the three-day tour match in St Kitts.
Simmons resumed on 171 and added 111 for a career-best before he was out lbw to Ryan Sidebottom, his first wicket following a six-month injury layoff.
England raced to 134-2 in reply by the close of play.
Although Alastair Cook sliced to gully first ball, captain Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell both struck half-centuries.
Bell extended his tendency to get out when well set and failed to take advantage of being dropped on 49, when five overs from the close he was bowled around his legs sweeping leg-spinner Gavin Wallace.
England were given 28 overs to occupy on the second evening by a West Indies side, who had made the visitors toil throughout the day.

Steve Harmison was the pick of the England bowlers, finishing with 4-101, with James Anderson inducing an edge from Sewnarine Chattergoon through to Matt Prior for the other wicket.
Durham paceman Harmison's post-lunch spell reaped a double breakthrough when extra bounce unsettled Leon Johnson and a fortuitous leg before decision accounted for home captain Darren Sammy.
Andrew Flintoff had earlier tested his side strain with a gentle warm-up in the nets and appeared as a substitute fielder shortly after lunch.
But the day belonged to Simmons, who smashed 26 fours and eight sixes before the hosts declared shortly after tea.
A single off Paul Collingwood took him to his 200, which equalled his career-best and the 24-year-old continued his assault thereafter.
Sidebottom eventually trapped him lbw after more than nine-and-a-half hours at the crease.
