Sunderland have signed defender Tal Ben Haim from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season

The 26-year-old Israeli centre-back has been involved in just nine Premier League games this season for City.

Ben Haim joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Bolton in June 2007 before moving to City in July 2008.

"I've worked with him previously and I know what I'm getting," said Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia, referring to their time together at Bolton.

Sbragia worked as Bolton's first-team coach between 2005 and 2007, before joining Sunderland's coaching staff.

"It's been a position we've been short in so I'm delighted that Tal has joined us," added Sbragia. "He's got a lot of top-flight experience and he'll be a great addition to our squad."

Ben Haim has been a regular for his country, including two matches against England during qualifying for Euro 2008.
