Given having medical at Man City

Shay Given
Given has been at Newcastle since 1997

Newcastle keeper Shay Given is having a medical at Manchester City after the two clubs agreed a fee for the Republic of Ireland international.

The Magpies granted permission for 32-year-old Given to start talks with Mark Hughes' side earlier in the week.

It is thought Newcastle wanted a fee of about £8m for the keeper after boss Joe Kinnear dismissed City's £5m offer for him as "insulting".

Given was left out of Newcastle's squad for Sunday's match against Sunderland.

He has played 461 games for the Magpies since joining for £1.5m from Blackburn in 1997, but has made it clear he wants to leave the struggling Premier League team.

Given has been first-choice keeper at Newcastle during his time at the club and Kinnear is adamant the club will have to be properly compensated for selling a player he believes to be the best in his position in the country.

On Tuesday, Newcastle keeper Steve Harper, who is a long-term second choice behind Given, signed a new three-year deal with the club.

Meanwhile, Kinnear says he is still hopeful of signing Toulouse right-back Albin Ebondo.

"We're still tied up in negotiations," said Kinnear.

"The original price was £2.5m but [Toulouse] moved the goalposts and it's now £3m. We are still out in France negotiating. It's been two weeks now, so we have to wait and see."
