By Piers Newbery

1450: "Spectacular tennis!" says Jonathan Overend on the Red Button. It's break point and Monfils returns a smash, dives to play a backhand off the floor behind the baseline, gets up to chase down a drop shot and then thumps away a volley. The crowd goes bonkers, Monfils goes more bonkers, and Melzer high-fives the Frenchman as they pass on the changeover. Great stuff. Monfils leads 3-2 with a break in the third.

1447: "Once again the lack of del potro coverage is bordering on scandalous. Yet to drop a set, destroyed murray 2 weeks ago, and hes mentioned only briefly. The big 4 is about to become the big 5 you mark my words."
From James, Leeds, via text on 81111

1446: "Shame we can't see JJ today.. Monfils and Melzer could go to 4/5 sets at this rate. Love watching Jelena, just waiting for her to win a slam!"
From Caroline via text

1445: "Can't believe I got that nugget about cibulkova out n forgot my name!"
From Alex, London, via text

1443: You nip out for 17 minutes and the world turns on its head. Or at least Gael Monfils' world - Melzer takes the second set 6-4 to level it up. Jankovic is storming away at 6-1 1-0 with a break, and Virginie Razzano beats Tathiana Garbin 7-5 7-5.

1426: Yikes. Monfils makes a mess of an attempted slam-dunk smash - they look good when they work and a bit embarrassing when they don't - but the Frenchman levels at 4-4. Excellent gossip from anon below, completely unsubstantiated but an excuse to roll out the rather ropey heart graphic. We are working on a selection of all-new graphics for Wimbledon - exciting. Off to grab a sarnie, back in a jiffy.

Love is in the air
1422: "Re: 1408, melzer n monfils may not be best of friends...melzer goes out with dominika cibulkova who previously dated monfils. It's either that or the fact melzer is getting taught a tennis lesson."
From anon via text on 81111

1420: Melzer clearly hasn't read the script out on Lenglen as he breaks the local favourite Monfils to lead 4-2, the Frenchman flopping a poor forehand into the net on break point, but Monfils gets the break straight back. No such drama for Del Potro who takes the opener 6-4 against Andreev.

1416: Today's picture gallery is up and running and there are some interesting shots of Andy Murray looking less than comfortable - I will investigate further...

1411: "Nadal tired! Surely the australian open final proved Nadal doesn't understand tired! And as for Roddick beating Federer, their head to head record is something ridiculous like 17-2 and Roddick seems to have a real block against Federer and clay!"
From Adele, Newcastle, via text on 81111

1408: "It's getting a bit tasty this," says Jonathan Overend on the Red Button as Melzer raises his game against Monfils to lead 2-1 on serve in the second set. Jelena Jankovic and Jarmila Groth are under way on Court one.

1402: "Just looking at some stats on the French Open website. Karlovic leads the ace table with 55 despite going out in round one; surely not? Has a player notched the highest number of aces in a slam without making it out of the first round?"
From Tony, Cambridge, via text on 81111

1400: Monfils rattles through the opening set 6-2 against Melzer. Jim Courier the other day described the Frenchman as possibly the best natural athlete tennis has ever seen. Still to come later today we have another considerable athlete in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, as well as the not too shoddy Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic. Look out - Del Potro is a break up on Andreev.

1356: "He actually looks a little bit tired to me. He doesn't look like he's fresh enough. I think it's going to be a tough challenge for him to win this time, actually."
Elena Dementieva on Rafael Nadal's chances of a fifth title

1352: "Yeh, personally i'd like to see a shirt final between nadal and monfils. have you seen monfils? looks like a lemon and cream pie."
From ipodda on 606

1350: "I'm just loving the current style for loud and proud shirt colours. Real 80s throw back! Not sure I'd get away with Nadal's current choice at my local public courts though..."
From roobs888 on 606

1350: Razzano is a set and a break up against Garbin, and Monfils saves a break point to move 4-2 clear of Melzer. That one is live on the Red Button and website streaming (UK only) right now.

1348: Ninth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus beats Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 5-7 7-5 6-2. Azarenka smacks a ball into the crowd in celebration, which prompts a few jeers, and then motions to boo back at them, which gets the predictable response. Great stuff, I think, and she signs a few autographs on the way off court, so no big deal.

1342: Some classic Parisian jeering as Azarenka drops serve - the Belarussian just turns and stares at the source of the noise. Don't mess with her. She breaks straight back to lead 5-2 in the final set against Suarez Navarro. Monfils is a break up on Melzer, and fifth seed Del Potro is under way against Andreev on Court Two. Should be some heavy hitting in that one.

1335: "Beat federer over five sets - don't be stupid, only nadal has ever done that consistently. Il est temps que federer gagne ici sur la terre battue."
From alex, macclesfield, via text on 81111

1332: Azarenka breaks again to lead 4-1 in the decider against Suarez Navarro. A couple of other matches I haven't mentioned - Italian Tathaina Garbin leads France's Virginie Razzano 6-5 on serve on Chatrier, and Spain's Lourdes Dominguez is close to levelling at one set all against Canadian 24th seed Aleksandra Wozniak on Court Seven.

1326: Twelfth seed Agnieszka Radwanska beats Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4. Azarenka and Suarez Navarro have resumed after finishing at one set all last night, and the Belarussian leads 3-1 in the decider.

1316: "I'm a Roddick fan, and he's playing great, but Federer on clay is a different prospect than the players he's played so far. But, he's won in straight sets again, and not been broken yet this tournament, so he's got a great chance of beating him, if they both get to the 1/4s obviously."
From spursgirl_4_life on 606

1310: The Red Button and website streaming (UK only) is sticking with Court Suzanne Lenglen for now and the start of 11th seed Gael Monfils against Jurgen Melzer.

1306: Sixth seed Andy Roddick beats Marc Gicquel 6-1 6-4 6-4 to reach the fourth round for the first time. He's clearly a happy man and gets a great reception from the crowd. "Usually Roddick can't wait to hop on the Eurostar and head to London for the grass-court season but you just sense maybe his business isn't finished in Paris," says Jonathan Overend on the Red Button.

1302: A bit of a delay there as I wait for Roddick to finish but Gicquel saves a match point and the American will have to serve for it. And the French Open is not on HD, but I believe Wimbledon is. Don't quote me on that though, details will follow nearer the time.

From Jon via text on 81111

1251: "Vania King Cone, Magnum Norman and Ahsha Arctic Rolle. Sounds scrumptious."

1249: Tommy Haas beats Jeremy Chardy 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-4. The German is through to the last 16 for the first and only time since 2002.

1243: Andy Roddick gets the first break at the start of the third set and looks on course for a first appearance in the fourth round. His coach Larry Stefanki looks serene in the crowd behind a massive pair of shades. Haas is serving for the match against Chardy.

1234: Haas takes an extraordinary 10 points in a row, and 12 of 13, as he recovers from 3-1 down to lead Chardy 4-3 with a break in the fourth set.

1228: Now we get the chance to see for ourselves if Andy Roddick is a real threat on clay as the Red Button and website streaming (UK only) is about to switch to Lenglen for his match against Marc Gicquel. The American leads 6-1 6-4.

1224: Elena Dementieva hangs on by a thread when Samantha Stosur fails to put away a second serve on match point, but moments later the Aussie sweeps away a forehand for a 6-3 4-6 6-1 win. "She did well to get through after a few nerves," says John Lloyd on the Red Button. "The serve and the big forehand are the strokes that got her through. It was a poor performance from Dementieva, who has really dropped off from the start of the year."

BBC Radio 5 Live
1222: Haas breaks at the start of the fourth. It seems that we have opened a can of worms regarding Roddick. "He's thin, fit, and playing without expectation," says 5 Live's David Law. "He is basically just getting his eye in for the grass-court season. That makes him dangerous at the French."

1217: Meanwhile, Chardy has nicked the third set 6-4 against Haas and the comeback is on. Roddick breaks Gicquel to lead by a set and a break at 4-3, and 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska and Kateryna Bondarenko are under way on Court Two.

1214: "Yesss!!!" screams Stosur when she thumps away a forehand. It's only for 30-15 but things are getting edgy out there now. Dementieva just cannot keep the ball in court enough and Stosur moves to 5-1.

Get involved on 606
1211: "To even consider Roddick would get through the last 16 would be baffling, considering he has never passed round 3 at Roland Garros. To consider him beating Federer might as well have said Rafael Nadal would have gone out first round here!!"
From Pickles91 on 606

1209: A very solid hold of serve puts Stosur in total charge at 4-0, while Roddick is on serve against Gicquel in the second set and Haas is level pegging with Chardy in the third.

1206: "Alize Cornetto?"

1205: "Roddick to upset Federer on clay? Quite frankly Roddickulous."
From Will, Oxford, via text

1202: My computer has a breakdown at the exact same moment as the Dementieva serve - spooky. A couple of double-faults see the fourth seed fall two breaks and 3-0 down in the decider, and we could be in for the first shock of the day.

BBC Radio 5 Live
1153: Roddick seals the first set 6-1 against Gicquel, and now might be good time to reveal that 5 Live's David Law is picking the American to make the quarters and possibly upset Federer. We shall see. Haas and Chardy are 3-3 in the third.

1150: Dementieva earns a first set point on the Stosur serve but cannot convert. A walloping forehand into the corner gives the Russian a second opportunity and this time Stosur goes wide - one set all. "Stosur played her worst two service games when up a break," says John Lloyd on the Red Button. "Dementieva relied on her experience but didn't really play that well in that set."

1145: Maria Sharapova is enjoying having the Parisian fans' backing after being booed off in the last two years. "You're ranked outside the top 100, so people like you. When you're number one in the world, for some reason they don't like you any more. It's amazing how the society works. Especially here in France, I think they always love the underdog, and they always love the one that comes back from behind, or the one that's not expected to win. I'm probably that person."

Someone is having a tantrum
1141: A stunning backhand pass and a forehand winner take Stosur to 4-4 and this match is livening up. The Aussie misses with her return and Dementieva holds for 5-4. Uh-oh, Chardy has broken back against Haas. I didn't see it but Tommy will not be happy, so it gets a graphic.

Text in your views on 81111
1138: "Dementieva is No 4 in the world because she has the ability to make up for her poor serve with some wicked groundstrokes. on her day she is one of the best from the baseline."
From Ben via text on 81111

1137: "Jordan has obviously found tennis soothing after her recent break from peter andre."
From Mike in Canterbury at work via text

1134: Roddick is quickly a break up on Gicquel and Haas is enjoying a trouble-free morning at two sets and a break up on Chardy. Stosur and Dementieva battle on at 4-4.

1127: Another edgy games sees Dementieva move to break point at 3-2 up, but Stosur hammers down her third ace of the day and goes on to hold. Roddick takes the opening game on serve against Gicquel, and Haas moves two sets clear of Chardy.

1123: I wouldn't say Kuznetsova is the only one who can beat Safina but they are far and away the form players. Both the Russians have shown frailties in the latter stages of Grand Slams though and the likes of Serena, Jankovic, Ivanovic and even Sharapova remain contenders. Basically, my money's on Safina but only 10p.

Text in your views on 81111
1118: "How is dementieva No 4 she serves worse than jankovic! Also do you think kuz playin like this is the only one who can beat Safina?"
From Gem via text on 81111

1115: And Stosur is broken with a poor service game - 2-2 and this one could take a while. Haas is not messing about though and leads Chardy by a set and 4-1.

1111: Stosur and Dementieva are swapping breaks for fun on Chatrier and the Aussie moves ahead again at 2-1. Next up on Lenglen is Andy Roddick against Marc Gicquel - an esteemed tennis journalist has just told me he fancies Roddick to reach the quarters and "maybe even shock Federer". You heard it here first.

1107: Svetlana Kuznetsova beats Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3. She is not hanging about - I've had a more strenuous French Open than Sveta so far.

1100: Haas has snaffled the first set 7-5 against Chardy, Kuznetsova is a set and a break up on Czink at 4-3, and Stosur and Dementieva swap breaks at the start of the second.

From Jordan via text

1055: Rafael Nadal had some interesting things to say about Richard Gasquet last night, following the Frenchman's recent positive test for cocaine. "I support him. I'm certain that he's not taking anything. He's not taking cocaine. I know him. He's a good friend of mine, and I discussed this with him last week. No, no, impossible. He's most certainly not taking cocaine. If you kiss a girl who's taken cocaine, anything can happen, and that's the truth. That's reality, and this can destroy your life or your career, rather, and this is most unfair."

1052: Stosur takes the first set 6-3 against Dementieva after a dramatic game which sees the Aussie save a couple of break points with aces, and miss a first set point with a woeful volley. "Stosur got a bit tight but she got through it and Dementieva is making way too many errors," says John Lloyd on the Red Button.

1045: A couple of belting forehands take Stosur to break point but she goes for too much. The Dementieva second serve is sitting up and begging to be hit though, and Stosur does exactly that on her second break point to move 5-4 ahead. Czink has slowed up Kuznetsova a little but the Russian breaks for 2-1.

1040: A quick resume of yesterday's key debate topic - the battle to find the best tennis-player-sponsored confectionery. My favourites, in no particular order: Jame Flake, Novak Chocovic, Lleyton Chewitts, Victor Haneschews, Juan Carlos Ferrero Rocher. Credit is due to Maria Sharapavlova, but Crunchy Nut Clijsters? Now you're being silly.

1035: Good point, Jordan (surely not the Jordan?), Azarenka and Suarez Navarro resume at 5-7 7-5 after Haas and Chardy on Court One. Kuznetsova continues her stunning pace at this tournament, wrapping up the first set 6-1 against Czink. It's much harder going for fellow Russian, Dementieva, as Stosur is now 3-2 on serve and very much in this one.

1029: "Lets see if Djokovic gets past a projected Del Potro in the quarters. Lots of talk of Djokovic being the "only one close" to Rafa. Im thinking he will have a fight to get past Del Potro."
From herefordu on 606

1024: Stosur breaks straight back with some great stuff from the baseline, working an opening and smacking a forehand into the open court on break point. So what did we all think of Andy Murray yesterday? Hard to make a real judgement as Tipsarevic was struggling physically, but the Serb started brilliantly and I thought Murray did well to wrestle the initiative from him. Cilic will be very tough in the next round though.

1019: Dementieva gets an early break, seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova is already 3-0 up against Melinda Czink on Court Suzanne Lenglen, and Tommy Haas saves a break point in the first game against Jeremy Chardy on Court One.

Get involved on 606
1013: "Even if Mathieu plays in front of a partisan crowd, anything less than a convincing straight sets victory by Federer will be a sign that he is not a real contender for the title..."
From therealsatyricon on 606

1010: Dementieva and Stosur are out on Chatrier. "On paper Dementieva is a heavy favourite but she hasn't really played well here," says John Lloyd on the Red Button. "She was very fortunate in the previous round when Dokic defaulted when up by a set. Stosur would have been really encouraged by that."

1005: Here's the provisional plan on the Red Button and website streaming (UK only) - Samantha Stosur v Elena Dementieva, Andy Roddick v Marc Gicquel, Christophe Rochus v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Paul-Henri Mathieu v Roger Federer.

1000: Matches to look out for today are the last on Court Philippe Chatrier between hit-and-miss Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu and increasingly hit-and-miss 13-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, Serena Williams up against the woman with four names, Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, in-form Novak Djokovic against Philipp Kohlschreiber, and many, many more...

The sun is out
0955: Good morning. It's another beautiful start to the day in west London and we're told it's set fair for days to come. Nonsense, I say. The weather reports are notoriously unreliable and I suggest you bulk-buy tuna fish and bottled water, draw the curtains and hunker down here for another gripping day at Roland Garros.
