Sunderland bid for Hull's Turner

Michael Turner
Turner had at one time been on Liverpool's wish list

Sunderland hope to sign Hull defender Michael Turner before the transfer window closes at 1700 BST on Tuesday, BBC Sport understands.

Black Cats manager Steve Bruce has been given permission to speak to the 25-year-old who has been chased by several clubs throughout the summer.

Hull boss Phil Brown said on Sunday offers currently tabled were "getting towards a ridiculous valuation".

The Tigers snapped up Sunderland defender Paul McShane on Sunday.

But even if ex-Charlton trainee Turner, who joined Hull from Brentford for £350,000 in July 2006, does head for the Stadium of Light, there is little chance of Black Cats striker Fraizer Campbell following McShane to Hull.

The 21-year-old former Manchester United front man was a target for Hull before he joined Sunderland in July.

Despite suggestions that Brown would ask for Campbell as part of any deal for Turner, he has already made an impression on Wearside and will not be allowed to leave.

Bruce has worked hard to recruit defensive targets this summer, landing Paraguay international Paulo da Silva and loan signing John Mensah to date.

However, McShane has moved to Hull for an undisclosed fee, while Danny Collins, having held talks with Stoke, is also being chased by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

With Nyron Nosworthy also attracting interest as the transfer window begins to shut, Bruce is determined to bolster his resources at the back further.
