West Ham defender Calum Davenport has offered his "heartfelt thanks" for the support he has received since he was stabbed in both legs last month.

The 26-year-old was in intensive care for six days after the incident on 22 August and he remains in hospital.

In his first public message, Davenport said: "Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support to me and my family, it's very much appreciated.

"I have quite a long way to go before I recover, but I am feeling positive."

Davenport was attacked at his mother's home in Kempston, Bedfordshire and his sister's boyfriend has since been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The former Coventry and Spurs star added: "Thanks to the club, my team-mates and fans, to the club doctors and amazing staff at Bedford Hospital who have looked after me so well.

"I would also like to thank anyone who has ever donated blood, as you probably saved my life. I would like to encourage everyone to give blood."
