Rangers close in on Rothen deal

Rangers aim to tie up a transfer deadline day deal for French winger Jerome Rothen.

The 31-year-old Paris St Germain player, who was in the France squad for Euro 2004 and Euro 2008, is in Glasgow for talks with the Ibrox club.

Rothen spent three seasons with Monaco before switching to PSG in 2004 but has fallen out of the first team picture with the Ligue 1 co-leaders.

If he signs on, Rothen will be the first new face at Ibrox for 12 months.

Rangers have been busy pruning their first team squad, with the departure of several fringe players this summer.

Rothen, who was the star man in Monaco's run to the 2004 Champions League final, would strengthen manager Walter Smith's attacking options.

A move to German side Schalke collapsed, leaving the left-sided player, previously linked with Blackburn, looking for a new challenge.
