Roberts injury worry hits Blues

Cardiff Blues lost Lions star Jamie Roberts to an ankle injury in their 18-16 defeat in Connacht.

The Wales centre only made it until half-time in his comeback game after a man-of-the-series tour in the summer.

The Blues, bottom of the Magners League table after three opening defeats, will assess Roberts' injury on Monday, with the Scarlets in Cardiff next Saturday.

"He would be a big miss and obviously a concern for Wales," ex-Wales and Lions centre Mark Taylor told The Back Page.

"They will want him back and firing on all cylinders for the November Tests.

"Jamie was superb during the summer. He's such a big-game player and such a threat in every aspect.

"He's obviously strong and a big runner with the ball, but he's also very quick and has good hands.

"I just hope that the news on Jamie is not too bad."

The Blues are at least fortunate in having quality cover in the three-quarters.

606: DEBATE

Tom Shanklin, who suffered the devastating blow of missing the Lions tour with a shoulder injury, has targeted the Scarlets game on 26 September for his comeback, as has Wales wing Tom James.

Gavin Evans made his Blues debut from the bench in place of Roberts in Connacht, New Zealander Casey Laulala will arrive this autumn, and Gareth Thomas, Dafydd James and Dafydd Hewitt are also available.

Blues assistant coach Justin Burnell remained upbeat after his side's disappointing start to the season.

"There were more plusses than negatives [this time]," he told BBC Radio Wales' Saturday morning sports show The Back Page after the Connacht defeat.

"We're very disappointed but it was just unfortunate on the night - personally I thought it was bad luck.

[The Blues] are in a difficult place. You don't want to be in the habit of losing games

Mark Taylor

"There are a lot of areas to work on but we'll get it right. We started quite late last year.

"There's another big game next week - Llanelli [Scarlets] at home on the telly.

"That's what our focus is on - to get the show back on the road."

Taylor has hope that the Blues will improve but believes their position is a concern.

"When the Lions and their injured players are back, they will be a different team," said Taylor.

"But having played three and lost three is a bit of a concern.

"They are in a difficult place. You don't want to be in the habit of losing games."
