Jo-Wilfried Tsonga bowed out of the Valencia Open after being forced to retire while trailing Mikhail Youzhny 6-7 (3-7) 6-0 3-0 in round one.

It was not immediately clear why the third-seed withdrew but he dropped nine straight games after clinching the first set when Youzhny returned wide.

Fifth seed Gilles Simon was the first player to reach the quarter-finals with a 6-4 4-6 6-3 win over Tomas Berdych.

In another first-round match, Janko Tipsarevic beat Victor Hanescu 6-4 6-3.
