Bond ruled out of Pakistan series

Bond has had two gaps of more than two years in his Test career

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Pakistan after suffering an abdominal tear.

The 34-year-old returned to the side for the first time since 2007 in the opening match in Dunedin and took 8-153 as New Zealand won by 32 runs.

But an ultrasound revealed a tear, and Bond will miss the final two Tests.

"I wanted to get it checked out to make sure I wouldn't let the team down and got a bit of a shock," he said.

Injuries have blighted Bond's career and have restricted him to just 18 Tests since he made his debut against Australia in November 2001.

His five-wicket haul in the first innings against Pakistan was the fifth of his career, however, and despite his fitness problems the express-pace bowler has captured 87 Test scalps.

There was better news for seamer Iain O'Brien who dislocated his finger in the opening match but is confident of being fit for the Wellington Test beginning at 2300 GMT on Wednesday.

He explained: "It shouldn't affect me letting go of the ball. It's if it comes back at me that could cause me some problems."
