Crosas upbeat on Celtic chances

Midfielder Marc Crosas insists Celtic can still progress in the Europa League despite sitting bottom of Group C with two games remaining.

Celtic must beat leaders Hapoel Tel-Aviv on Wednesday and Rapid Vienna, and hope Hamburg lose their two games to progress in the tournament.

"I think we still have a chance," the 21-year-old Spaniard said.

"The table says we still have a chance. So, we need to do our job, win our games and then we will see."

Celtic's opening Group C game was in Tel Aviv, where they deservedly led through a Georgios Samaras strike before the home side countered with two late goals in the second half.

A defeat by Hamburg at Celtic Park was sandwiched between draws at home to Rapid Vienna and away to the Bundesliga side.

I think the team is confident of getting our first win in the group

"I think the team is confident of getting our first win in the group.

"When you play in Europe it is at a higher level and it is the small things that make the difference.

"Maybe we didn't score with the chances that we had in games and that's why (we are bottom of the group)."

Tony Mowbray's side have been criticised for their inconsistent form, but last weekend's win over St Mirren saw them move top of the Scottish Premier League.

And Crosas believes the criticism directed at the stuttering side has galvanised the players.

"It is good for us because we need to improve every day. Everybody knows we need to be better. I think we still have a chance," said Crosas.

MY SPORT: DEBATE

The Spaniard believes Celtic's biggest problem this season has been their inability to score a second goal after taking the lead.

"In terms of the league, we are top and that is all that really matters," he said.

"We have played some good football this season and the first game against Aberdeen at Pittodrie was brilliant.

"But now we are thinking about the Europa League and we have a difficult game tonight."

Mowbray hopes his Celtic side develop a ruthlessness in front of goal to boost their chances of European progress.

"The first game in Tel Aviv was an opportunity that we let slip through our fingers in the last quarter of an hour," the Celtic manager said.

"In all the games, we have had the opportunity to win the match and yet we have ended up losing a tight game or drawing a game we should have won. But we are where we are."

Mowbray believes the Group C leaders, who came through two qualification rounds, have proved to be something of a dark horse in the competition.

"When I watched them and studied them, I could see they were a very technically gifted football team with some very good players," he said.

"The part of the world they come from is not a market that has been massively tapped into by teams in the UK.

"I would suggest that there are one or two more players playing in Israel who could enhance the quality of most teams, if you wanted to take the time to study them and get through the work-permit issue."
