Wales handed Rees fitness boost

Matthew Rees has given Wales coach Warren Gatland a fitness boost as the Lions hooker is set to return from injury for the 2010 Six Nations.

The Scarlets star was expected to be out for at least three months after suffering a groin tear in Wales' 33-12 autumn Test defeat to Australia.

But Rees is ahead of schedule and is to be fit for Wales' Six Nations opener with England on 6 February.

Scarlets coach Nigel Davies said: "He will be back sooner than anticipated."

Lions scrum-half Mike Phillips and his Ospreys team-mate Duncan Jones, the understudy to Wales' number one loose-head prop Gethin Jenkins, are also facing a race against time to be fit for Wales' Six Nations campaign.

Rees' Scarlets team-mates wing Mark Jones (knee) and flanker Dafydd Jones (shoulder) remain doubts but Ospreys pair Lee Byrne and Shane Williams will be okay.

And now key hooker Rees, who starred on the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in the summer, is expected to be available for selection.

Rees injured his groin in Wales' final November international but the 29-year-old will be able to win his 35th Welsh cap against England at Twickenham.

"Matthew is about three weeks away from returning," added Scarlets coach Davies.
