Nigel Worthington's NI deal expires at the end of this year

Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has declared his interest in the vacant Sheffield Wednesday job after Brian Laws quit on Sunday.

Worthington's Northern Ireland contract expires at the end of 2009 and he has yet to sign a new deal despite talks with the Irish Football Association.

"I spent 11 great years there as a player and the club means a lot to me," Worthington told the Belfast Telegraph.

"If the chance arose to speak to them, I'd have to listen to what they say."

No official contact with Worthington has been made by the Owls, with the likes of Darren Ferguson and Steve Cotterill also thought to be in the frame.

"I have to weigh up my options," he added.

"It would only be fair to myself and my career but at this moment in time there has not been any contact and I am still under contract with the IFA and enjoying working with Northern Ireland."

Laws left the struggling Championship club by mutual consent on Sunday.

The Owls lost 3-0 at Leicester on Saturday to slip into the bottom three and have not won since 17 October.

Academy boss Sean McAuley has taken temporary charge following Laws' exit.

Assistant manager Russ Wilcox and development coach John Dungworth have also left the club.

McAuley previously served as caretaker manager between October and November 2006 following the departure of Paul Sturrock and the arrival of Laws.
