Former Germany and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann is to retire from football at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old, now at VfB Stuttgart, has said he will hang up his boots when the Bundesliga campaign ends on 8 May.

Lehmann won 61 caps for Germany and was the national side's number one keeper at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 European Championships.

He is in his second season with Stuttgart and has insisted that he will not consider any offers from abroad.

"That is what the family council has decided," he explained.

Lehmann joined Arsene Wenger's side from Borussia Dortmund in 2003 as a replacement for David Seaman, and played in every match as the Gunners went unbeaten for the entire 2003/04 Premier League season.

However, he left the club in 2008 after losing his place to Manuel Almunia.

Lehmann also played for Schalke and AC Milan, and his last international game for Germany was their 1-0 defeat by Spain in the final of Euro 2008.
