Maradona has surgery for dog bite

Argentina coach Diego Maradona required 10 stitches in his lip after he was bitten in the face by one of his dogs.

The 49-year-old Maradona's upper lip was repaired by plastic surgeons at the Buenos Aires Los Arcos clinic after the incident with his Chinese Shar-Pei.

"He's already at home and he's in good spirits," said his press officer.

Maradona, who captained Argentina to their second World Cup win in 1986, was hospitalised in the same clinic in 2007 with toxic hepatitis from drinking.

After retiring from professional football in 1997, Maradona almost died from cocaine-induced heart problems in 2000.

Despite concerns over his substance abuse problems, explosive conduct and lack of coaching experience, Maradona was appointed to coach the national team after Alfio Basile resigned in 2008.

Argentina needed a victory away to Uruguay in Montevideo in their final qualifier to secure their place in South Africa for this summer's World Cup, though with Lionel Messi, arguably the world's best player, they are expected to do well in the tournament.
