Mercedes are preparing an extensively modified car for Michael Schumacher to drive at the Spanish Grand Prix. If the new car does not deliver the characteristics Schumacher says he needs to be competitive, serious doubts will be raised over the seven-time world champion seeing out his three-year contract.

They have held talks with 12 candidates over a potential seat for next year. As well as confirming proposed 2010 drivers Jacques Villeneuve and Kazuki Nakajima, the list included world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, and former F1 drivers Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien and Takuma Sato.

Former Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss Tony George is interested in taking Formula 1 back to the United States. The 50-year-old was in Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix, where he met at length with F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone and Zak Brown, founder and CEO of motor sport marketing firm Just Marketing who represents several high level sponsors.

Ecclestone has hit out at those who have criticised Lewis Hamilton's driving this season, telling them: "People should stop moaning about Lewis and the way he drives. He has been absolutely brilliant this season with some spectacular and courageous moves. I love his style and so do the fans."

F1 teams are close to agreeing a new engine formula for the six-year period beginning in 2013. El Mundo Deportivo newspaper says an in-principle agreement has been reached for a four cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection. The new formula would also involve KERS.
