Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Selby were level at 4-4 at the end of the first session of their World Championship quarter-final at the Crucible.

O'Sullivan's usual bravado was notably absent as the duo played at a slow pace, passing the two-hour mark with just six frames complete.

Selby's 84 break was the high point of the first half of the session.

The tension was obvious as both players struggled for fluency before O'Sullivan won the last frame with an 81 break.

The match began uncharacteristically slowly for an O'Sullivan game, with the opening frame lasting 55 minutes before he won it, only for Selby to take the next two comfortably.

He racked up a break of 84 in the second frame and won the third 82-0, before O'Sullivan levelled going into the mid-session break.

After the restart, a break of 90 gave Selby the fifth, with O'Sullivan replying with a break of 67 - his best of the match so far - to level the match at 3-3.

O'Sullivan looked on course to go 4-3 up until he missed the green, leaving it near the pocket and allowing Selby to clear the colours and take the lead.

The final frame also took its while to get going, before O'Sullivan found his form again and rattled off a break of 81 to end the session on level terms.

O'Sullivan and Selby will resume their match at 1430 BST on Wednesday.

In the other Tuesday afternoon match, Shaun Murphy opened up a 5-3 lead on Ali Carter.

Murphy, the 2005 world champion, managed the highest score of the match with a run of 70 in the first frame.

That match resumes at 1000 BST on Wednesday.
