Cahill sees red against Germany

Australia's Tim Cahill can still play in the World Cup after receiving a one-match ban for being sent off during his team's opening defeat to Germany.

Cahill, 30, will miss the Socceroos' match against Ghana on Saturday but could return to play in their final Group D game against Serbia on 23 June.

The Everton midfielder was dismissed during the 4-0 loss for a late tackle on Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger.

But Fifa said the offence merited just the automatic one-match suspension.

Cahill 'saddened' about red card

The Australian Football Federation delivered a robust defence of their star midfielder to Fifa's disciplinary committee, and he was also backed by Schweinsteiger.

After the game the Bayern Munich midfielder told a distraught Cahill that the 56th-minute dismissal was undeserved, leading the Aussie to break down in tears.

Australia will have to avoid defeat against the Ghana, who beat Serbia 1-0 in their opening game, if they harbour any hopes of progressing.

But Australian forward Harry Kewell believes the team cope without one of their most prolific goalscorers.

"Tim is a great player and it's disappointing he won't be there against Ghana," said the former Liverpool player, who is expected to come into the side after not being used in the Germany match.

"But we have got great players in our squad so we can cope with any players that we have or haven't got.

"I don't think it was a red card offence, and a lot of other Australians probably think the same thing. Probably most of the Germans don't think so as well, but it's a World Cup and these things can happen."
