Brown rues late penalty loss

Motherwell manager Craig Brown was stunned by Aalesunds's late equaliser in their Europa League third round qualifier in Norway.

Jamie Murphy's club record-breaking strike, his sixth in European competition for 'Well, looked to have secured victory for the visitors.

But Alexander Mathisen restored parity from the spot deep into injury time.

"I thought they weren't going to manage to score. They didn't look like doing so the last 20 minutes" said Brown.

Motherwell, who eased past Breidablik in the previous qualifying round, were confident of taking a lead into next week's second leg at Fir Park.

But right-back Steven Saunders conceded a penalty with a foul on Demar Phillips and the hosts snatched a dramatic draw.

"They players knew that if they got to the hour mark and they hadn't scored then we had a solid base to build on," said Brown.

"It looked like they would only score from a set-piece and they got a penalty, which was very softly-conceded."
