Australia's Katherine Hull and Taiwan's Yani Tseng lead the British Women's Open on four under after they both eagled the par-five 18th.

Tseng, 21, carded a flawless 68 and was joined by Hull, who also registered three birdies at Royal Birkdale.

France's Anne-Lise Caudal, Koreans Amy Yang and Sun Young-Yoo, plus American Brittany Lincicome are all a shot back.

American Michelle Wie is two under and England's Laura Davies and Scotland's Janice Moodie are both level par.

Scotland's defending champion, Catriona Matthew, had two bogies and a birdie on her front nine, but another two bogies on 10 and 11 meant she finished the day three over par.

Korea's Jiyai Shin, who currently tops the money list, is one under par, only three shots off the lead.

Tseng's consistent round, in which she hit all 18 greens, was sealed when she rolled in a 20-foot putt on the last, but Hull went one better when she finished with a 60-foot monster.

"I played really solid and I just love this course," said two-time major champion Tseng afterwards.

"I just wish we played courses like this all the time. It keeps you focused and makes you think. You don't think about what's happened or what might happen, you have to concentrate on every single shot."

Wie, who finished tied for third when she last competed at Birkdale as a 15-year-old amateur in 2005, looked like she was having a round which would fail to ignite after she bogeyed the first.

But she matched Tseng's late flurry with a birdie-eagle finish to stay within touching distance.

US Open champion Paula Creamer had a tough day, bogeying three of the first five holes, but she birdied the sixth and the 15th before another bogey to end the first round with a 74.
