Highlights - Women's British Open

Yani Tseng shot a second successive 68 to open up a four-shot lead at the British Women's Open at Royal Birkdale.

The 21-year-old from Taiwan sank five birdies and only one bogey in drizzly conditions for an eight-under total.

A chasing trio on four under par comprised of Korean Amy Yang (71) and Americans Cristie Kerr (67) and Brittany Lincicome (71).

Scotland's defending champion, Catriona Matthew, carded a disastrous 81 to drop to 12 over and missed the cut.

Matthew's horror round included three bogeys, one double-bogey and a 10 on the par-four 13th hole.

At the other end of the leaderboard, Kerr, with two majors already to her name, had six birdies on her way to her round-of-the-day five-under-par 67.

Tseng picked up her first shot of the day at the second but immediately negated that by dropping one on the next.

She birdied the sixth and finished the first nine on 34. Three more birdies at 14, 16 and 17 ensured she replicated that figure on her back nine.

"I feel super, and I feel confident - I just keep loving the links course," said Tseng, who also revealed she has been taking advice from former world number one Annika Sorenstam.

"She said she would teach me a lot, and the first question I asked her was 'How can I be number one in the world?'.

"And she's telling me what I should do right now, step by step. I'm always looking at the result. And practice is more important for me.

"And she knows I'm a really aggressive player, so she really wants me to play really smart, not just see the pin and always go there. So she told me I need to trust myself. If I stay patient, I will be on top one day."

Australian Katherine Hull, who had shared an overnight lead of a stroke with Tseng, fell down the field as a two-over 74 left her six off the pace alongside money list leader Jiyai Shin, of Korea, who shot another 71.

England's Laura Davies and Wales's Becky Brewerton were the top-placed Britons on two over, making the cut by four shots.

Four-time major winner Davies had four bogeys on her way to a mediocre 74, while Brewerton had a 73.

American Michelle Wie, who finished tied for third when she last competed at Birkdale as a 15-year-old amateur in 2005, was also on two over.

She followed up her opening 70 with a wayward 76 that featured two double-bogeys and two bogeys.

US Open champion Paula Creamer toiled around the Southport course for her second 74 but still survived the halfway cull by two shots.

However, English women Georgina Simpson, Karen Stupples, Trish Johnson and local amateur Kelly Tidy, as well as Scotland's Lynn Kenny, Krystle Caithness and Vikki Laing, all missed out on a place in the final two rounds.
