A horrible blunder from Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard gifted Blackburn the points at Ewood Park.

The American inexplicably dropped the ball when he came to collect a cross in the 14th minute and Rovers striker Nikola Kalinic nipped in to score.

Everton plugged away for the equaliser but, although their passing was neat, they lacked a cutting edge up front.

Blackburn stuck to their task well but Paul Robinson needed to be at his best at the death to deny Phil Jagielka.

Ewood Park was bathed in sunshine before the match as Rovers paid tribute to benefactor Jack Walker on the 10th anniversary of his death, and Walker would have been proud of the way his team acquitted themselves.

They had a great chance to open the scoring with three minutes on the clock when Morten Gamst Pedersen put Martin Olsson clean through on goal. The Swede lofted the ball over the on-rushing Howard but it comfortably cleared the bar.

The home side were dealt a big blow when David Dunn was forced to leave the action after just nine minutes with what looked like a groin strain, sustained as he stretched to make a challenge.

The injury-plagued midfielder cut a frustrated figure as he was replaced by Steven Nzonzi.

Everton, wearing their new lurid pink away shirts, played a patient passing game but their attacking threat was easily blunted by the Blackburn defence, while 18-year-old Phil Jones was particularly impressive for Sam Allardyce's side in the middle.

Everton's back four, on the other hand, were looking a little shaky, although it was Howard who gifted Rovers the opener on 14 minutes.

The American came to collect a cross but the ball wormed out of his grasp and into the path of a grateful Kalinic, who tucked it into the empty net.

As the first half wore on, Everton began to pose more of a threat and Tim Cahill had their first shot on target, but Paul Robinson was quickly down to snuff out the danger.

It was all Everton now, with Leon Osman next to home in on goal. The winger wriggled his way towards the Blackburn penalty area and won a free-kick just outside the box after being halted by a stray boot.

Mikel Arteta's kick was deflected behind off the wall, but from the resultant corner, Marouane Fellaini back-heeled the ball into the path of Steven Pienaar, whose shot was dropped by Robinson.

The former England number one, who retired from international football at the start of the week, was relieved to see his defenders clear the threat.

Rovers began the second half in the ascendancy, with Jones again at the heart of the action, this time driving forward 60 yards before the move broke down. The teenager, who made his England Under-21 debut against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, looks an exciting prospect.

Everton continued to press for an equaliser but after seeing wayward shots from Jagielka and Arteta, Toffees boss David Moyes decided it was time for a change, bringing on debutant Jermaine Beckford - signed on a free from Leeds in the summer - for Osman.

Allardyce responded by taking off goalscorer Kalinic and introducing Mame Biram Diouf, on loan from Manchester United.

The Senegal frontman made an immediate impact, using his electrifying pace to good effect, and was denied his first goal by a combination of Howard and the offside flag.

Diouf was involved again minutes later, freeing Jones on the left. The youngster cut in, but was stopped by a last-ditch tackle from Sylvain Distin as he prepared to shoot.

Rovers went even closer soon after, Steven Nzonzi heading over from El-Hadji Diouf's pinpoint cross when perhaps he should have done better.

A minute later, a cheeky chip from Mikel Arteta caused mayhem in the Blackburn defence. Three times substitute Diniyar Bilyaletdinov looked as if he was going to score but Rovers somehow scrambled it clear.

Everton almost snatched an equaliser right at the end, but Robinson did well to palm away Jagielka's stinging effort, ensuring Blackburn got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start.
