Rangers opened the defence of their Scottish Premier League title with a narrow win against a determined Kilmarnock side at Ibrox.
A bizarre goal that rebounded into the net off Kenny Miller's back gave the home side the lead on 16 minutes.
Steven Naismith scored against his former club to double Rangers' advantage early in the second half.
Jamie Hamill stroked home a penalty for Killie after Sasa Papac had fouled James Dayton, but Rangers held on.
Both sides handed debuts to recent signings, with Rangers' sole capture of the summer so far, James Beattie, starting and David Mendes Da Silva, Ben Gordon and James Dayton all taking the field for the visitors.
Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston had unfurled the flag to mark last season's title win before kick-off and, when the match got underway, the hosts looked determined to get the new campaign off to a positive start.
Miller forced Cammy Bell to make a crucial interception early on and then headed wide from Madjid Bougherra's high, hanging cross.

The striker then fired towards goal from Kirk Broadfoot's disguised pass at a free-kick, but the shot was deflected wide.
However, from the resulting corner, the hosts made the breakthrough as Broadfoot's low shot was blocked on the line by Gordon and James Fowler's attempted clearance rebounded off Miller's back and into the net.
Kilmarnock, being managed for the first time by Mixu Paatelainen, tried to respond and Da Silva's corner found the unmarked Fowler, but the midfielder's volley was deflected wide by Miller.
Beattie was denied a debut goal when his volley from Steven Whittaker's knock-down was palmed away by Bell's superb point-blank save.
Danny Invincibile caused uncertainty in the Rangers defence when he got in between David Weir and goalkeeper Allan McGregor to chase an incisive cross, but the latter scrambled the ball clear.
Invincibile was then inches away from connecting at the back post as a teasing low cross was deflected just out of the Australian's reach.
The Ayrshire side continued to enjoy possession in dangerous areas, but Rangers weathered the storm until the break.
A slip by Frazer Wright at the start of the second half gave Beattie a clear run at goal, but the striker took too long to get his shot away and Bell made the save.
Wright then deflected a Kyle Lafferty shot on to the post as Rangers looked to double their lead.
Continued pressure from Rangers saw Naismith having a drive from distance that Bell claimed at the second attempt.
But the former Rugby Park player did not have to wait much longer for his first goal of the campaign as he latched on to Miller's pass over the top of the Killie defence and lashed home from inside the six-yard box.
Almost immediately, Kilmarnock were given the chance to reduce their deficit as Papac was adjudged to have pushed Dayton in the area and Hamill calmly stroked home the spot-kick.
Another Lafferty shot was blocked and almost seized upon by Miller, but some frantic defending by the visitors ushered the ball clear.
Rangers seemed intent on keeping the ball high up the park to stave off the threat of an equaliser and a patient series of passes ended with Whittaker dragging a shot wide.
Killie failed to make the most of the possession they had in the closing stages as Rangers saw out the win.
