Senderos sidelined for six months

Fulham defender Philippe Senderos faces six months on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

The former Arsenal player was injured while training in London after withdrawing from the Switzerland squad to play Austria on Wednesday.

"It's an unbelievable setback for Philippe, a terrible blow for him, his club but also for the national team," said Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Senderos, 25, only joined the Cottagers from Arsenal in June.

He is expected to undergo an operation by the same surgeon in Finland who treated David Beckham for an Achilles injury in March.

Senderos was signed by former Fulham manager Roy Hodgson after failing to command a regular first-team place either at Arsenal or during loan spells with AC Milan and Everton.

Hodgson has since moved to Liverpool, with Mark Hughes taking over at Craven Cottage.

Senderos was a member of Switzerland's World Cup squad but had his tournament ended early by an ankle injury in the first half of their opening match, a 1-0 win against eventual champion Spain.

The injury to Senderos, who missed the game with Austria because of a toe injury, leaves Fulham with a defensive headache.

Brede Hangeland, who has been linked with a potential move to Arsenal, and Aaron Hughes are the only other recognised centre-halves after Chris Smalling left for Manchester United in a £10m deal.
