Rothlin won silver in Gothenburg in 2006

Switzerland's Viktor Rothlin is the new men's marathon European champion after winning the gold medal in Barcelona.

Rothlin clocked two hours, 15 minutes, 31 seconds to finish more than two minutes ahead of Spain's Juan Martinez.

Russia's Dimitri Safronov took bronze medal in a time of two hours 18:16secs while Britain's Lee Merrien finished eighth with two hours 20:14secs.

Britons David Webb (16th), Dan Robinson (19th), Ben Moreau (24th )and Martin Williams (28th) also featured.

"Rothlin set a really tough pace ahead but I just tried to hold a steady rhythm and not get involved with any counter-attacks as I've tried in the past and I'm very satisfied with my silver," said Martinez.
