Bolton cancel Shittu's contract

Shittu's Nigeria drew one and lost two of their three World Cup games

Bolton have terminated the contract of Nigerian defender Danny Shittu.

The 30-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Trotters when he moved to the Reebok Stadium from Watford for a reported £2m fee in August 2008.

Shittu made 12 appearances in his first season at Bolton, but he did not feature for the first team last season.

However, the centre-back was still named in Nigeria's 2010 World Cup squad and played in all three of their Group B games in South Africa.

The centre-back, who began his career as a trainee at Charlton, moved in 2002 to QPR on a permanent deal financed by supporters after he impressed during a loan spell.

Shittu played more than 160 games for the R's before moving to Watford for £1.6m in the summer of 2006.

He has recently set up a competition that will see one Nigerian footballer win a contract with Belgian first division side Royal Charleroi.
