        MATCH PREVIEW

Aston Villa and Birmingham go into the second city derby as second-class citizens in the Premier League following lacklustre starts to the season.

In these games the will to win is as important as the skill to win, I think

        Villa manager Gerard Houllier

Villa have been hindered by a lack of goals and the need to adjust to a new manager. Gerard Houllier, though, boasts an impressive derby record. At Liverpool, Houllier was unbeaten in his last nine matches against Everton, and he extended that sequence by another four games in charge of Lyon against St Etienne.

Past results may count for nothing, but Birmingham - who are yet to win away this season - will be desperate to end a record run of six successive defeats in this fixture.

The most recent clash, in April, was not without controversy. Villa won with a late, disputed penalty by James Milner to complete a third straight league double over the Blues. Birmingham defender Roger Johnson was later charged by the FA for calling the referee Martin Atkinson "a disgrace".

The simmering rivalry will intensify over the coming weeks, with the two clubs rewarded for reaching the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup by being drawn to face each other at St Andrew's.
