Kaymer now has seven European Tour titles and one major

Martin Kaymer won the Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews as Lee Westwood failed in his bid to overtake Tiger Woods as the world's number one.

Resuming in fifth, and needing to come second to dethrone Woods, Westwood fired a 73 on a windy Old Course to end 10 shots off Kaymer's 17-under total.

A 66 proved enough for the German Ryder Cup star Kaymer, with England's Danny Willett two shots back alone in second.

John Parry, who led by two overnight, was another stroke back in third.

After putting himself in contention with a marvellous 66 at Carnoustie on Saturday, Westwood began his final round solidly, with seven opening pars before picking up shots at the eighth and the 10th.

However, four bogeys in his next seven holes put paid to his top ranking aspirations before a consolation birdie on the last.

The Worksop golfer was not overly perturbed at falling short, revealing he was hampered by the calf injury, which had threatened his participation in Europe's victory over the United States at Celtic Manor last weekend.

"The calf got progressively more agitated and sore as the week progressed. I haven't given it a chance to fully heal. I got to about 80% [fit] for Celtic Manor which I thought would be enough given the adrenalin that goes with the Ryder Cup.

"It's not easy, with only two days off and spending six hours on my feet - if it hadn't have been [Westwood's businessman playing partner] Johann [Rupert] and the Dunhill I wouldn't have bothered coming."

Westwood, though, revealed not play until next month's World Golf Championships HSBC Champions event in Shanghai at the earliest, which, due to the machinations of the ranking system, will guarantee he ends Woods's five-year reign in three weeks' time - unless the American changes his plans and enters a tournament.

"You won't see me back until I can practise fully and do myself justice," added Westwood.
