Soderling looked out of sorts from the start against Golubev
|
Robin Soderling and Tomas Berdych were both sent crashing out in the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open.
Top seed Soderling never got going as Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev defeated the Swede 6-3 6-2 in just 71 minutes.
And while third seed Berdych put up a stiffer fight against David Ferrer, the Czech was ultimately undone by the Spanish fifth seed 4-6 7-5 6-4.
Russian pair Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev will face each other in the other semi-final on Saturday.
Fourth seed Youzhny overcame 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-1, while Andreev beat Canadian Milos Raonic 6-1 3-6 6-3.
Golubev, who won his first tour title in Hamburg three months ago, was in inspired form against Soderling, breaking the big-serving Swede four times while saving all four break points he faced.

The 23-year-old looks set to quickly climb the rankings from his current spot at number 41, and he said: "I just tried my best but didn't expect to register a straight-set victory.
"I believe I can break into the top 20 soon and my performance here in Malaysia will give me some extra confidence."
Meanwhile, Ferrer's victory was his fourth in a row - and fifth in seven meetings - against Berdych.
Despite going a set down, Ferrer broke Berdych in the 12th game of the second to even the match, but then lost his serve to trail 4-3 in the decider.
But the Spaniard broke right back and clinched the match when Berdych double-faulted on match point.
